Research shows that entrepreneurs working in the Brazilian recycling industry, one of the most sophisticated in the world, are willing to invest in the coming years Packaging is the main source of recycling, 39% of the recyclers are 90% or more recycled. Brazil has a mature recycled plastic industry, diversified and willing to invest more in 2018, aiming at the growth of the sector. This is the latest mapping of plastic recyclers in Brazil, conducted by the Institute of Administration Foundation (FIA), for the year 2016. The initiative is the Plastic Chain Incentive Plan (PICPlast), a partnership of the Brazilian Association of the Plastic Industry (ABIPLAST), and Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in the Americas.
Of the analyzed universe, with about 110 recyclers, 37% consider that the period was stable or better compared to the previous study and 43% plan to invest in the coming years. “Brazil has one of the most sophisticated markets in the world for plastic recycling. In a few places we find the diversity of application we have here, “says FIA professor Leandro Fraga, who is responsible for the research. According to the scholar, Brazil is ahead in relation to the supply of products processed from recycled plastic, being able to produce from simple items, such as packaging covers, to pieces for the automotive industry, considered more complex.
Transformers’ investment intentions The maturity of the sector can be represented by the time the companies operate. According to the mapping, 94% of transformers have existed for more than six years, with 79% being in operation for more than a decade. Regarding the size of the players, the study reveals a well-balanced market, with 49% of large and medium-sized companies and 51% of micro and small companies. Porte of the companies interviewed
The recognition of the value of plastic as raw material by companies is also increasing, according to the survey. “Recycled plastic is another way to produce plastic. In addition, consumers already recognize recycling as an attribute and not a cheap resin, “says Fraga. Packaging is the main source of recycling, 39% of the recyclers are 90% or more recycled. The domestic market is the one that most provides recyclable material to the processors. The mapping shows that only 5% of respondents import raw material, which represents only 2% of the total recycled volume. The recycling champion is polyethylene, resin recycled by 27% of the study participants. Polypropylene (23%), PET (16%) and PS (15%) are also highly representative. For Leandro Fraga, the bottleneck of this industry is the difficulty of access of the transformers to the plastic to be recycled. According to data from the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA), only 13% of urban solid waste in Brazil is destined to recyclers. “We need to keep in mind that the importance of recycling is already a reality. Seeking solutions to this bottleneck is an issue that needs to be addressed in the short term. ” About PICPlast
The Plastic Chain Incentive Plan (PICPlast) is an initiative created in 2013 by Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, and ABIPLAST, the Brazilian Association of the Plastic Industry, foresees the development of structural programs that contribute to competitiveness and the growth of plastic transformation. Based on three pillars: increasing the competitiveness and innovation of the transformation sector, stimulating exports of plastic products and promoting the advantages of plastic, PICPlast also has investments aimed at strengthening professional qualification and business management.
In the pillar of plastic advantages, the work fronts are focused on recycling, technical studies, education and communication, especially the Transforma Plastic Movement. To know more, visit http://www.picplast.com.br and plasticotransforma.com.br.
