In the Trump era, Mexico wants to trade with Brazil and Argentina

At a time when Mexico does not understand the US president, Donald Trump, in relation to free trade, one of the priorities of the Mexican government is to conclude agreements with Brazil and Argentina in the short term – said Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray in Tuesday. “Today, it is a priority of the Mexican commercial policy to establish in the short term trade agreements with the two main economies of the Southern Cone,” said the minister.

The Chancellor acknowledged that the Trump administration persists with “notorious differences” in some issues such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that has been in effect since 1994. This situation led Mexico to recognize the imperative need to diversify their economic, commercial and investment relationships with other areas beyond North America.

“With regard to the two main economies (Latin American), Brazil and Argentina, it must be recognized that the economic relationship was below its potential, partly due to lack of meetings, lack of reciprocal willingness to establish trade agreements,” he added. The United States is the destination of over 80% of Mexico’s exports. Videgaray assured that the process to strengthen ties with Argentina and Brazil “is advancing in an encouraging way.” “Mexico is, always has been and always will be a Latin American country,” he added.
